Dr. Angela Voss
The Magic of Botticelli’s Primavera

In the 1480s the Florentine philosopher and magus Marsilio Ficino was writing about the power of natural magic to align one’s soul with the planetary deities using astrology, music, colours, aromas and most importantly, the power of the imagination. He tells us that the most powerful time to create a talismanic image is the spring equinox, the birthday of the world, as the sun enters the sign of Aries. In fact his rediscovery of Neoplatonic and hermetic image magic deeply informed Botticelli’s painting, and tonight is the perfect time to explore the secret symbolism in this enigmatic masterpiece. It contains a message about the power of love to awaken the soul to its true nature through the wisdom of the divine feminine, who directs the cosmic dance in this enchanted grove. We can all enter into this dance – because the arrow of Eros is universal and timeless, and Botticelli shows us how falling in love is a desire to return to the stars.
